World first in offshore methane emissions monitoring

BP is a multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, England. It is one of the world’s seven largest oil and gas supermajors with operations across 80 countries around the world.
BP have set ambitious new targets to be a net-zero company by 2050 or sooner. They have committed to monitor emissions across all their major oil and gas processing sites by 2023 and deliver a 50% reduction in their operated methane intensity. They approached Flylogix to help them develop a solution for the difficult challenge of measuring methane emissions offshore.
We combined highly advanced sensor technology originally designed by NASA for the Mars Curiosity Rover with our proven airframe. We mobilised from Papa Stour, a remote island off Shetland, and flew 185km circling their Clair Platform for 90 minutes to collect emissions data. This groundbreaking trial broke the UK’s record for the longest commercial drone flight and demonstrated the value in further developing this unique approach to monitoring methane offshore. We are delighted to continue the development of this technique with BP in the North Sea and support their industry leading work to reduce methane emissions.
