Methane Emissions Monitoring

Project Details

  • Client: BP
  • Category: Methane Emission Survey
  • Date: 2020 – ongoing
  • World first in offshore methane emissions monitoring
  • UK record for longest commercial drone flight
  • >100k data points captured
  • No personnel required offshore

In 2019 we worked with BP to deliver the worlds first offshore methane emissions survey conducted with a UAV operated from the shore. In 2020, working with operators including Total and Equinor, we have been taking this even further. With support from the industry this service will be available for routine measurement from June 2021.

BP is a multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, England. It is one of the world’s seven largest oil and gas supermajors with operations across 80 countries around the world.

BP have set ambitious new targets to be a net-zero company by 2050 or sooner. They have committed to monitor emissions across all their major oil and gas processing sites by 2023 and deliver a 50% reduction in their operated methane intensity. They approached Flylogix to help them develop a solution for the difficult challenge of measuring methane emissions offshore.

Working with our partner and methane sensor experts, SeekOps Inc, we combined highly advanced sensor technology originally designed by NASA for the Mars Curiosity Rover with our proven airframe. In 2019 we mobilised from Papa Stour, a remote island off Shetland, and flew 185km circling their Clair Platform for 90 minutes to collect emissions data. This groundbreaking trial broke the UK’s record for the longest commercial drone flight and demonstrated the value in further developing this unique approach to monitoring methane offshore. In 2020 the technology gained support from a growing network of operators along with industry support from OGTC to further develop this critical technology. Multiple measurement flights were conducted in 2020 with the next campaign scheduled for spring 2021.  The service will be available for routine measurements across the UKCS from summer 2021 and in other territories from 2022.

“Improving our knowledge, understanding and performance by testing new technologies and working closely with suppliers is central to the North Sea’s carbon reduction plan, which aims to limit greenhouse emissions in our North Sea business. This pilot project represents a significant step forward in our ability to do that.”
